Export Trial and Consumer Tasting of Minimally Processed Pineapples to Perth, Western Australia, 30 June – 8 July 2011
The first consignment of Malaysian minimally processed pineapples landed in Perth, Australia on 30 June 2011 together with a group research team from MARDI, Malaysian Pineapple Development Board, FAMA and LPP. The product was cleared by the following day thanks to high compliance to standards set by Biosecurity Australia.
With the assistance from a local importer, Kongs Trading Pty Ltd, product quality test and consumer tasting activities for two pineapple varieties, namely, Josapine and MD2 have been successfully conducted at the following locations:
- Kongs Trading Warehouse, Kewdale;
- Kongs Trading Asian Supermarket, East Victoria Park;
- Oriental Cash and Carry, Canning Vale;
- Love and Care Restaurant;
- Mahsuri Cafe;
- Insan cafe; and
- Bintang Restaurant
The consumer feedback is overwhelming with 97% positive comments for both Josapine and MD2 varieties. The preferred packaging system is round shape pack with cling film cover and the preferred indicative price for a 200g pack is between AUD2.00 –to AUD2.50.
The product quality has been very good throughout the estimated shelf life (14 days from the date of packaging). Air transportation is recommended to shorten transportation time and allow products to be at supermarkets for a longer time.
Kong's Trading Pty Ltd indicated its interest to import and sell these pineapples at his supermarkets. Oceania Food Pty Ltd is also interested to distribute the product to various restaurants.
